“Babysitting”

by Christine W. Murphy

This is a comical doozie; you’ll find yourself smiling throughout this one. For crimes committed on his home world, John is exiled to a strange bug planet where he must rear a brood of avral bug children as penance. Of course, in the myriad and often confusing world of bugs, females are given certain tasks while the males are shackled with chores that aren’t as glamorous. Suffice to say he’s not exactly happy with the situation, and will do a lot more than hard time for his transgressions against his own species. A hilarious statement on the often diverse roles of males and females in the home.

Tangent Review

And there is more to go on to, such as Christine W. Murphy’s “Allergies,” the high point of my evening’s read.  Tracy has a problem.  We’re not sure what it is, but it causes her, from time to time, to get completely hammered, start a bar fight, and then skip to the next space station she can find.  Using her brain, brawn, and breasts (well, cleavage actually, but I had to go with the alliteration), Tracy tries to survive and maybe get a date.  An engaging story with a sympathetic lead, I was taken in both by Murphy’s style and by the relatively simple plot.  And I have to applaud the sheer volume of double entendres in a story without any actual sexual activity.  This goes in the good clean fun category, with an added wink or two.  Read “Allergies,” finish your brandy (or hot chocolate), and turn out the lights.

One contribution certainly hits the mark of Sizemore’s stated aim to deliver “dark” SF, and two more are close. “Allergies” by short fiction newcomer Christine W. Murphy tells the story of an itinerant security worker desperately trying to keep one space-station ahead of the secret of her weakness in a synthetic society. The run-of-the-mill situation is written well and easy to read. And that easiness is used to good effect as the story slides effortlessly to a disturbing conclusion. The secret, when revealed, is anti-climactic: the disturbing situation in which the protagonist finds herself is made all the more disturbing by her obliviously focusing on the ‘official’ denouement. The casual reader could be forgiven for making the same mistake.
